Abraham latched on to a Reece James’s cross scoring to make it an emphatic 3-0 win for Chelsea against Rennes in the Champions League. At the other end of the pitch, Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy did enough to shut out the visitors.

That win ensured Chelsea will top Group E of the Champions League with three fixtures remaining. Chelsea is yet to concede in this season Champions League. Alongside Liverpool, they are the only two teams yet to be breached this season in the tournament.

Chelsea transfer business is finally producing the results that were hoped for. Chelsea is yet to concede since the disappointing 3-3 draw with Southampton on the 17th of October. Two defensive suspect players, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christensen who started that match are yet to feature since then.

It might be a bit premature to say that Lampard has found his winning team and first eleven, but the early signs are very encouraging. With Chelsea’s new defensive recruits, Mendy, Thiago Silva, and Chilwell in the line-up, Chelsea has gone from strength to strength.

Chelsea is yet to concede in five straight games stretching back to the 0-0 draw with Sevilla in the opening fixture of this season Champions League. They have won emphatically in their last three games by a 4 gain and a two consecutive 3-0 scoreline.

We look at the players that have improved Chelsea this season, and sparked the bright run of form.

Thiago Silva

They said the best things in life are free. This statement is as good as it gets when it comes to Thiago Silva. A free bargain for Chelsea, 36 years old, Thiago Silva announced he will leave PSG after 8 years in France. They have disappointedly lost the Champions League final to Bayern Munich, raising down the curtain in a trophy-laden sojourn in the French capital club.

PSG will go on to regret that move as Thiago Silva has gone to become a mainstay in Chelsea’s first team. After a nervy start against newly-promoted West Brom in a 3-3 draw, he has since brought his experience and leadership skills. He has formed a promising partnership with the ever-improving Kurt Zouma in the heart of the Chelsea defense.

In his six starts for Chelsea, he has been colossal keeping three clean sheets in the Premier league and two in Champions League.

As for PSG, they are still struggling with the loss of their former captain. They are currently struggling in the Champions League with two losses from three games.

Edouard Mendy

The former Rennes shot-stopper has been a revelation at Chelsea. He was snapped for just £22 million, at the advice of former Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech. He has usurped former Chelsea no. 1, Kepa Arrizabalaga becoming a steady presence in Chelsea’s line-up.

Mendy was signed just two seasons after Chelsea signed Kepa in a £71 million that broke the transfer record for a goalkeeper. He failed to live up to the hype committing some high-profile errors that led to goals. He was part of the team that conceded 54 goals in the English top-flight last season.

The new shot-stopper, Mendy has proven to be a reliable and steady hand between the sticks. He has gone six games without conceding a single goal. The last time he let in a goal was against Tottenham, from Erik Lamela’s effort.

Ben Chilwell

The left-back position has been a problem position for Chelsea over the years. Marcos Alonso, signed by Conte did well on the left, but as a wing-back rather than a conventional left-back.

He struggled last season becoming a weak link and target of opponent’s attack. He failed to offer enough width for Chelsea’s attack.

This prompted Lampard to convince Chelsea to fork out £50 million for the England international. The former Leicester player was also a target for Manchester City, but Chelsea did enough to secure his signature.

He has gone to become a regular for Chelsea creating chances for the team with his excellent deliveries from the left flank and set-pieces. He has chipped in a goal too for Chelsea.

It can now be said that Chelsea have fixed the problem position for a long term given that Chilwell is just 23.

Timo Werner

The versatile German international attacker was signed from RB Leipzig for around £47.6m. A coup for Chelsea for a hot forward who is already on the radar of a host of European top teams especially Liverpool.

He scored an impressive 94 goals for RB Leipzig becoming the club all time record scorer.

He has hit the ground running in Chelsea already scoring seven goals. His direct running and the dynamic display have made him difficult for opposition defenders. Werner can also play in both the flank or through the center. As he has already proved, he was able to play as a second-striker or winger allowing Tammy Abraham to retain his favoured striking position.
